Tintinnabulum, conopeum and ensign
The tintinnabulum and the conopeum are the two emblems of a basilica: the tintinnabulum is a small bell in a decorated frame, the conopeum is a half-open sunshade of red and yellow silk. In 1923, Pope Pius X granted the chapel of the Holy Blood the title of ‘basilica minor’ and confirmed with this that an important veneration took place there. The ensign is a polychromed wooden sculpture with the portrayal of the legend of count Thierry of Alsace, who receives the relic.
Saint George’s guild
In the Middle Ages, the guild guaranteed the defence of the city. The oat walks in front, while the archers with their crossbows form the guard of honour around the relic of the Holy Blood.
Noble Brotherhood of the Holy Blood
The Noble Brotherhood of the Holy Blood, with at the head the provost who is recognisable by his rich necklace, precedes the relic. All members wear a black silk gown with on it the emblem of the Holy Blood, a pelican that feeds its youngsters with its own blood.
