City messengers
The magistrate of the city sends city messengers on a horseback to the four quarters of the compass in order to announce the procession and the annual fair.
Crafts
Until the end of the 18th century, crafts and guilds were responsible for the organisation of the procession.They carry their flags that testify to their identity within the Bruges society.

Flag-wavers
On their flags shines the pelican that pecks open its own breast, in order to feed its youngs with its own blood. Already in the early centuries of our era, this symbol was used as a reference to Jesus Christ who has given His life for the salvation of the world.
