Cross-bearing
The cross becomes the symbol of suffering and at the same time of the everlasting life that Jesus brings to those who believe in Him. On the way to Calvary, Jesus is still assisted by Simon of Cyrene and Veronica, who wipes His blood-stained and sweating face. Jesus’ mother follows behind, supported by His favourite disciple John.
Cross-death
Jesus has to choose for loyalty to His Father, who has given Him the task to preach and to live in love, even if it would cost Him His life. The Golgotha event is represented by the miraculous crucifix of Damme.
Stabat Mater
‘Stabat Mater’ refers to the opening words of a medieval hymn, ‘Stabat Mater dolorosa’, which translates as ‘The sorrowful mother stood there’. The poem tells of Mary standing beneath Jesus’ cross and experiencing her grief. We reflect on the unspeakable suffering endured by those left behind.
