Bruges celebrates!
When the Procession of the Holy Blood takes to the streets, it's a day of celebration for the city and its residents. The people of Bruges really get into the spirit, their costumes harking back to a painting from the early sixteenth century by an anonymous Flemish Primitive active in Bruges: the Master of the Holy Blood. This artwork is a nod to the Passion of Christ, a pivotal element of the procession. The girls dressed in the colours of Bruges symbolise the event's recognition in 2009 as part of the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO.
Noble Brotherhood of the Holy Blood
Three members of the Noble Brotherhood of the Holy Blood open the procession. The Brotherhood is the keeper of the relic and the organiser of the annual procession.
Bruges’ most beautiful day
Girls announce that the procession is the most beautiful day in Bruges. They wear a white-red robe - the colors of the city of Bruges - on which the coat of arms of the city also adorns.
