Press & media

Discover Bruges’ centuries-old tradition filled with Biblical scenes and cultural heritage. Prepare for a unique journey through history.

Visit Bruges

Every year, on Ascension Day, the Procession of the Holy Blood moves through the historic city centre of Bruges. This procession, originating in 1304, reflects deep-rooted faith and a rich city history. Over the centuries, the tradition has evolved into a true spectacle.

The Procession of the Holy Blood requires several weeks of preparation. And these preparations are ideal fodder for interesting reports: there’s plenty of sewing, ironing and cleaning. Get in touch if you’re interested in finding out more about a report or other media campaign.

The Procession of the Holy Blood is the event Bruges looks forward to every year! You’re welcome all day on Thursday 9 May. The actual spectacle itself begins at 14:30 (starting at the Dijver).

How we can help each other

Collaborations bring our rich heritage to life! We keep the tradition alive and kicking with content in (online) newspapers and magazines, and on radio and television. As an organisation, we provide fascinating stories and visual delights. Thank you in advance for featuring the Procession of the Holy Blood in your media!

Press accreditation

Press accreditation gives you access to the route and the city halls where preparations take place. Apply via persdienst@brugge.be. Provide your correct contact details, so we can send you your press badge and practical information. Wear this badge visibly during the event. It grants you access to the entire route and the place where preparations take place.

Practical information

Preparations for participants and workers start weeks in advance in the city halls (Markt, under the belfry, entrance via Oude Burg). The hustle and bustle starts at noon on the day itself, at the same place. You will find animals in Pandreitje, Astridpark and the vicinity of the Oude Burg.

The Procession of the Holy Blood begins at the Dijver at 14:30 and takes you on a route through the heart of Bruges’ city centre. The procession lasts about an hour and a half at each point along the route. Follow the route on the map.

You can of course conduct an interview with the organisation to gain interesting insights – with many different stories and angles possible. For everything to be as efficient as possible, it’s best to arrange an interview before 13:30 or at the end of the day from 17:30 onwards.

Guidelines

We ask you to stick to the following guidelines to make sure the event runs smoothly:

  • Do not interrupt or hold up the procession.
  • Do not stand in the middle of a group of participants.
  • Do not walk through the groups, and avoid walking along with a group.
